“What is art if not finding a thousand different ways to play?”
— Sari Carel
Fun fact: The first “playground” in the United States was a giant sandbox (called a “sand garden”) in Boston’s North End. Sari Carel’s The Shape of Play, open in the North End’s Waterfront Park through October 31, digs directly into these site-specific public-space histories. Her Bauhaus-inspired sculptures are surrounded by sandboxes and emanate sounds sourced from local playgrounds. We spoke to the artist and play-seeking passers-by alike to trace the interactions, inspirations, and stories behind our first project post-pandemic.
