Summer at Lot Lab has been in full swing with no plans for stopping yet.
In July, we welcomed Sophia Moon, Charlestown teaching artist and owner of Essem Art Studio, to host a family morning workshop inspired by Massiel Grullon’s Knotical Waves. Each little artist created their own maritime artwork with their own take on what a sailboat should look like.
Ghada Amer stopped by to see her Women’s Qualities (2001) installation and treated us to an artist walk through of the piece which you can watch here. Amer discussed the evolution of the series, from the first garden in South Korea, to the current iteration at Lot Lab, which was originally commissioned for Desert X.
Looking to the end of the month, on August 26th, we invite all ages to attend when A Trike Called Funk takes the stage for an afternoon of beats, breakdancing, and more. This “Ladies First '' cypher event draws inspiration from Queen Latifah’s track of the same name, and featured on the stage will be an all-star lineup of female dancers.
And where would Lot Lab be without the PAA’s? Since our opening, our six Public Art Ambassadors have brightened and livened up the space in a number of ways. Most recently, they’ve eagerly been taking on roles outside the job description. Prior to our lovely tour with Ghada Amer, a number of PAA’s worked diligently to trim, plant, weed and control the plants filling (and overfilling) the planters of Women’s Qualities. Using the leaf blower was an exciting skill added to some resumes. We even had a superhero PAA help our local Lot Lab bunny get unstuck from in between the “BEAUTIFUL” planter letters. We are accepting name applications for our local Lot Lab bunny, by the way!
Following the animal theme, our PAA’s have taken many, many polaroids & pics of doodles, whoodles, aussie-doodles, dachshunds & huskies, in front of Grullon’s Knotical Waves. One visitor very thoughtfully suggested a Lab meetup at Lot Lab. That’d make it #LMALL. (Lab Meetup @ Lot Lab.) All of our PAA’s have very much enjoyed participating in the different chalk activities by various visitors. Most notably, one young artist stopped by who created a wildly intricate and vibrant hopscotch, but with a fire breathing dragon in the center, and a box with a skull in it. Obviously, you couldn’t step on either of these because you’d catch on fire.
You might be surprised to know that being a PAA is also a workout. They have both won (and lost) at racing 5 year olds, and 50 year olds through Grullon’s wonderful winding maze. The five year olds in particular seem to enjoy asking to race again, again and again. Whooof! They get their rest when the parents begin to ask about Sam Fields piece, Stay, and they enjoy a nice long discussion about splicing, fibers, ropes, and other exciting terms.
Make sure to stop by Wednesday between 2-6 and/or Saturday between 10-6 to say hey! We’ll see you at Lot Lab!
